Private tutors – the real value and cost.

Is a tutor actually worth the cost for GCSE and A-level?

One of the most common questions parents ask is simple:
“Is private tutoring really worth the cost?”

With hourly rates ranging widely, it can be difficult to know what you are paying for and whether it will make a real difference. Our guide gives a clear, honest view.

What does a tutor cost?

£20–£35 per hour
Usually graduates or less experienced tutors. Good subject knowledge, but often limited teaching experience.

£40–£65 per hour
Experienced tutors or qualified teachers. Strong understanding of exam boards, curriculum, and how to teach effectively.

£70+ per hour
Highly specialist, tutored at a high level for many years, examiner experience or in very high demand subjects.

What are you really paying for?

The biggest difference is not knowledge, it is classroom teaching experience. A good tutor will:

  • Understand exam boards and mark schemes
  • Adapt explanations quickly
  • Build confidence as well as knowledge
  • Focus on exam technique, not just content

A cheaper tutor may simply repeat what school has already done or work through a revision guide.

Online vs in-person tuition

Online tutoring is now the norm for many families. 65% of our 4500 lessons this past year were delivered online.

  • More flexible
  • No travel time
  • Access to a wider pool of tutors

For most GCSE and A Level students, online works extremely well. Read more about online tuition.

Is tutoring worth it?

When done well, tutoring can:

  • Improve exam technique quickly
  • Build confidence
  • Help students focus on the right areas and in the right order
  • Lead to improvements of 1 to 2 grades over time

But it works best when:

  • Your child is open to receiving support
  • There is a clear goal
  • The tutor is the right fit personality wise

Finding the right tutor

This is often the hardest part. Parents usually want to know:

  • Are they experienced with this exam board?
  • Can they actually teach, not just know the subject?
  • Will they build rapport? Are they reliable and available?

If you would like help with this, you can book a short consultation with Andy Gardner, our Tutor Director.

Final thought

Tutoring is not about doing more study.

It is about doing the right things, with the right support.

A good tutor should make things clearer, calmer, and more focused.
