The Background
This Harrogate-based student came to Up Your Grade during Year 12 after struggling to keep up with the demands of A-Level English Literature. Although she achieved a Grade 5 at GCSE (just one mark off a 6), the step up to A-Level was challenging – and she wasn’t enjoying the subject.
Her mum mentioned that she was working at around a C grade, but hoped to improve to a B with the right support. The student needed help unpacking texts in more depth, improving exam technique, and finding a way back into the subject with renewed confidence.
The Solution
We matched her with Karen, an experienced A-Level English tutor, for weekly online sessions. These were ideal for fitting around her busy evening schedule and felt comfortable and normal for her age group, especially after so many online lessons during Covid.
The Future
Karen worked closely with the student through the transition into Year 13, building understanding step by step. With a new, enthusiastic Head of English providing momentum at school, and Karen reinforcing the core skills at home, the student began to enjoy the subject again – and believed in her ability to succeed.
